If you visit any Kenyan club today, you will not leave before the DJ plays the hit song Wamlambez in many cases more than once. The song by Kenyan boy band Sailors which was an immediate hit once released has defined the party scene by being the go to song for any Kenyan party. However, on Monday, Sailors posted a video on their twitter exposing a group of mourners at a funeral dancing to the club banger.

Sailors who have released other such club hits such as Pekejeng posted the above video on their twitter handle and captioned it as “Celebration of life in remembrance of the deceased.” It is not yet clear whether the video is a joke since details on the deceased are not available. We will never truly know whether the decision to carry out the funeral in this unorthodox manner was that of the deceased or of others.

Minutes after the video was posted, it went viral and the reactions were quite interesting. “At my funeral when people start twerking I will rise from the dead. People can’t be having that much fun when i’m dead.” This is one of the comments on twitter regarding the video. Many reactions were of the opinion that the funeral went too far in the wrong direction.

No publicity is bad publicity, especially when it comes to celebrities. Therefore, despite people’s opinion on the group posting the video and inspiring such behavior, Sailors continue to increase awareness of their place in the music industry especially among the youth who are now also called the wamlambez society.
