Kenya 7s Rugby players Francis Wanyama and Alex Olaba were sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for gang raping a local female artist in 2018. The case which had caught the attention of several Kenyans was put to a close on Thursday the 8th of August by Magistrate Martha Mutuku at the Milimani Law Courts.

On the night of the gang rape last year, the victim Wendy was celebrating her birthday and went to a party hosted in Kilimani. It was there at a certain apartment where the two rugby players Alex and Frank were present. After she had been acquainted with the two, she went home with them later when the celebration was over. It was after arriving at their place that she claimed they took advantage of her drunken state and raped her repeatedly despite her struggles and constant no’s.

In the statements of the accused, they insisted that the sex was consensual and that the victim was making false accusations. After reviewing all the evidence, Magistrate Martha shared that a deterrent sentence was necessary after seeing how traumatized the complainant was.

The defense lawyers tried to request jail time removed on grounds of how young the rugby players were at the time of the incident but the request was swiftly declined by the magistrate. She charged them guilty of gang rape with a 15 year sentence attached to it. Her ruling was fierce and fair and many Kenyan citizens especially women are satisfied that justice has been served.
