Mothers Compete for Beds and Hospital Labour Suites at Kawempe General Referral Hospital In Uganda

Current situation at Kawempe General Referral Hospital in Uganda is that patients are abundant to the extent that mothers are now competing to get a place to lay with their newly borns.

“The number of patients keep on increasing mostly due to referrals from lower health facilities”, Health Ministry officials claim.

They also state that healthcare centres provide comprehensive emergency obstetric care, including Caesarean sections, blood transfusions and anaesthesia, but because most of these clinics across the country do not have adequate capacity in terms of hospital personnel and supplies, people are referred to the General hospital for better treatment, thereby causing an increase in population, which doesn’t bode well for pregnant women who are due.

The post-natal ward where mothers are supposed to be referred six hours after normal delivery is only equipped with a few mattresses, thereby most mothers who are unfortunate not to get a bed lie on the bare floor with their newborns, which exposes the babies to pneumonia and other infections that can lead to death.
