A prominent member of the Sudanese Military Council ruling the country has vowed the Army will abide by the agreement stipulated in a power-sharing deal they would be signing today.

The deal which is seen as the culmination of bloody protests in the country is a welcoming news to the Sudanese citizenry. General Mohamed Dagolo in an interview with BBC’s Zenab Badawi and monitered by africacelebrities.com, pledged the military’s support.

The Sudanese people embarked on series of protests against worsening economic conditions under their long-term leader, Omar al-Bashir. This led to his overthrow by the military in April this year.

The protests intensified after the military refused to relinquish power to civilians. Thus brute force was applied leading to hundreds of deaths among the protesters. The military, under intense pressure decided to enter into a power-sharing deal with the civilian.

With the new deal, six civilians and five generals would form a governing council. The head will be rotated between the civilian sand military. A civilian will also be appointed as the prime minister. The council is expected to last for three years and then elections will be held to elect a new president.
