Ghana and Ethiopia Have the Highest Hotel Room Rates in Africa

Hotels are ridiculously expensive in Ghana and Ethiopia—to the extent that these countries have been ranked at the top as having the highest hotel room rates in Africa.

While about 100 dollars would get you a decent hotel room in most parts of the world—and sometimes even a room at some 5-star hotels in Europe, you cannot get a room for a night in any 4-star hotel in Ghana with that amount.

STR, an American company that tracks supply and demand data for the global hotel industry which reportedly conducted the study found that Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa has the highest average daily rate (ADR). And that between July 2018 and June 2019, Addis Ababa posted an average daily rate of $163.79.

Accra, Ghana, which was ranked the second posted daily rate of $160.34.

As a traveller, I cannot find any justification for the extortionate rates hotels in Ghana and Ethiopia charges—apart from the fact that there is a lack of competition at the top.
