Schools In Anglophone Cameroon Remain Close In The Midst of Rebellion In Troubled Regions
Many schools in Cameroon’s troubled anglophone regions remain shut even as the new academic year starts this month. The shut down has been successful following series of threats by the rebels agitating for the release of their jailed leaders.
The rebellion started in September 2017 after rebels embarked on armed conflict in the anglophone Northwest and Southwest regions against the French-speaking central government.
The separatists declared a secession of the anglophone regions calling the new country Ambazonia. They accused the government of discrimination against the English-speaking citizens. This triggered a crackdown from the Paul Biya-led government.
