Foreign Students Can Now Stay and Work in the U.K For Two Years After Graduating from University–Time to Study in the UK is NOW

Foreign and international students in the U.K will now be allowed to stay behind in the country and work for up to two years after graduating from university.

The new policy is an extension to the previous policy which allowed only a four-month stay post studies and is designed to boost the appeal of the U.K as a university destination for overseas students.

The old policy, which allowed foreign students only four months of stay after completing their course, was introduced in 2012 during former Prime Minister Theresa May’s tenure as Home Secretary.

The new policy, introduced by current PM Boris Johnson, scraps May’s policy and returns to the previous benchmark of a two-year stay in the U.K for graduates.

The new policy takes effect from 2021 and would apply to all foreign students who study for their undergraduate, postgraduate or doctorate degrees in the U.K.

By allowing foreign graduates the chance to stay in the U.K for as long as two years, it boosts the country’s prospects as a destination for foreign students to study, thus increasing chances for universities to rake in more revenue.

Alistair Jarvis, chief executive of Universities UK, praised the move.

“For too long the lack of post-study work opportunities in the UK has put us at a competitive disadvantage in attracting those students,” he said.

Jarvis added: “We strongly welcome this policy change, which will put us back where we belong as a first choice study destination.”

Showcasing the need for more foreign students, figures from the Telegraph show that “there are currently 460,000 foreign university students in the UK, generating £20 billion per year through education exports – which includes income from international students, English language training and education technology solutions being sold worldwide.”
