Nicky Minaj – Red Lobster Waitress

The Trinidad and Tobago-born rapper’s rise to fame began after she came to the U.S. to pursue her music career. Despite the move, she had to work to make ends meet.

After applying for several odd jobs, she finally gained employment as a waitress at a Red Lobster restaurant in the Bronx.

Nicky Minaj once admitted in an interview that she was left traumatized by customers who would leave rude comments rather than tips on her shifts. She was eventually sacked for confronting a couple who had stolen her pen.

Kanye West – Gap Sales Associate

Before Kanye’s claim to fame, he worked as a sales associate at the GAP while growing up in Chicago. According to Kanye, he didn’t enjoy it and he made it clear in his 2004 song “Spaceship” from his debut album The College Dropout.

In the song, he rapped that he made “No scratch” at the retailer, so he stole from it and eventually quit. Since then, Kanye has become the most talked-about black celebrity in hip-hop, designing his own clothing collection, Yeezy Collections.

Gabourey Sidibe – Phone Sex Operator

Empire actress Gabourey Sidibe revealed in her book ‘This is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare‘ that she faced a lot of racism and discrimination even as a phone sex operator before her fame.

She told Trevor Noah that the company told her to refrain from sounding “black”, despite the fact that 95 per cent of the women working there were black.

She landed her career-making role in the 2009 movie, Precious.

Jennifer Hudson – Burger King Employee

Born in Chicago, Jennifer Hudson rose to fame in 2004 after her American Idol contest. She became more popular after appearing in the 2006 film Dreamgirls which gave her an Oscar for her performance.

Prior to that, she sang at Burger-King Drive-Thru window in her hometown. In 2007, the company awarded her free Burger King for life.

Meghan Markle – Calligrapher

The Duchess of Sussex made a living off the talent as a calligrapher, a talent she annexed while she was young in an all-girls catholic school in Los Angeles. The Suits star said she practiced the craft in a handwriting class.

A woman of many talents, she loves calligraphy. She was an actor until she joined the royal family in 2018.
