Many of us have dreams, whether big or small. And the truth is, while a lot of us may achieve our dreams or compensate ourselves with achieving things similar to our dreams, millions of people’s dreams will remain a dream in their lifetime. It’s called a dream for a reason.

Ghanaian musician-Becca had a dream, one that’s gradually fading away with the lapse of time. I am sure it hurts that she may never mount a stage with Beyoncé, or that she would not be named the contemporary Yvonne Chaka Chaka of Africa.

In-between the obvious dying of her career which once seemed to have had a future in the eyes of many, she has decided to brand herself by changing her complexion—in a manner that catapults her to make newspaper headlines as the Michael Jackson from Ghana.

Becca robustly insists that she has not changed her cream and her complexion—and that she is not taking any pills or injections to become lighter with the rise and fall of the sun.

But, everyone looking at her from the side-line is certain that her complexion has suffered a drastic change—from an African woman, to whatever she probably calls herself now.

I hate to stereotype but a friend just said the fact that Becca is now married to a man from Nigeria, a country that World Health Organization estimates that about 76 million of its citizens, mostly women, use skin-lightening products regularly is going to give more credence to her skin-changing journey.

I cannot bring myself to comprehend what would lead someone like Becca, into the darkness of skin-lightening.

Today, she is trending—not for her music, but her skin colour.

Maybe she should quit music and effortlessly launch a skin-bleaching product.
