Vice President Dr. Bawumia Explains The Logic Behind Free SHS Double Track System

The Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has offered an explanation to the people of Ghana the logic behind the double track system.

The double track system came into place when the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) government under President Nana Akufo-Addo implemented its Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

However, the the double track system was not met with approval by many Ghanaians. For them, it has the potential to diminish the quality of secondary education in Ghana.

Thus, since its implementation, the double track system has become a topical issue of debate in the country. And now the Vice President, Dr. Bawumia has explained what necessitated the double track system.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the Free SHS policy is critical for the future of Ghana because the key to the development of any nation is the education of its people.

He further stated that in the first three years of the policy, there has been an increase in enrollment for Free Senior High School education in Ghana by 69%.

Addressing some of the challenges with the Free SHS policy, Dr. Bawumia said: “even though we haven’t dealt with all the challenges, we are dealing with them.

We’ve had to introduce the double track system as a way of dealing with the temporary increase in the students. And we’re going to build the infrastructure; in fact we’re building the infrastructure and in a few years the double track system will be history.

Explaining why the double track system was necessary, Dr. Bawumia said: “It is important that we start the double track system now because of this 69% increase. If we hadn’t started and brought the double track system, then many would have been seated home.

The Vice President used an analogy of how church services are held in some of the mega churches in the country. Drawing on the similarities, Dr. Bawumia stated that it’s like when a church membership grows so high and they decide to do first and second church services to accommodate for increased membership.
