Imagine finding not 1, not 2 but $43,000 in a couch you purchased; What would you do? Keep it or find its owner and return it.

A Michigan man bought a couch for his home in December but made a shocking discovery late last week.

Inside the cushions of the second hand couch, he found $43,000 hidden. I know! Jackpot!

The man in question, a Howard Kirby bought the couch from a store in Owosso, Michigan.

After taking it home and using it for a few weeks, he felt the cushions were a bit uncomfortable.

When his daughter-in-law decided to unzip the cushion and see the source of the discomfort, she found a box with the cash.

“I had to pinch myself to make sure I was not dreaming or something,” Kirby told a local radio station.

Kirby decided to take all the money back to the store to be traced to the owner of the couch.

The cushion and cash found in it

An attorney had already told Kirby that he had no legal obligation whatsoever to return the money. However, Kirby said that keeping the cash did not feel right.

Turns out, the couch and money belonged to the late grandfather of the seller,Kim Fauth-Newberry.

“It’s just crazy, why he’s got money in cushions I don’t know,” said Fauth-Newberry.

The Furniture store owner was shocked and inspired by Kirby’s integrity. Many people would have kept the cash.

“To me, this is someone who in spite of what they’re going through, in spite of their own needs, has said ‘I’m just going to do the right thing,” he said.

The big question however is, what would you have done? Stayed with the fortune or traced back the rightful owner.
