South African radio and TV personality Somizi and his partner Mohale are in the process of planning the mother of all weddings.

First of all, they plan on the big day being all white and have even given the big day the #somhalewhitewedding.


The two who already had a traditional wedding have sent out the invites for their white wedding ceremony.

All their guests are instructed to dress as if it were their own wedding and wear red-bottom shoes.

The grooms-mates have already been handpicked and the venue secured. The couple are getting all the details together for a perfect wedding.

Gay couples in South Africa enjoy freedoms that many in the LGBT community do not have in other African countries.

For instance, in countries like Zambia, Sudan, Nigeria and Uganda gay marriages and relationships are a taboo punishable by jail time.

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni has several times called homosexuality a “western import.

In November 2019, 125 people were rounded up in a gay-friendly bar in Kampala, Uganda and some of them were charged.

Last year, Botswana’s High Court overturned laws that criminalized homosexuality – a big win for the LGBT community in Africa.

In the same year however, Kenya’s High Court delivered a ruling that upheld the laws that criminalize gay sex.

South Africa was the first nation in Africa to decriminalize gay sex in 1998. It therefore remains the safe haven for the LGBT community in Africa.

It will probably take many more years for most parts of Africa to embrace gay sex.

However when the LGBT community are finally free to express themselves more, we shall witness many more grand weddings.

Somizi and Mohale are quite lucky to be South Africans. Let us wait for pictures of their big day.
