Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister Condemns Demolition Of Nigerian High Commission Building In Ghana

The Foreign Affairs minister of Nigeria, Geoffrey Onyeama, has reacted angrily to the demolition of his country’s high commission property in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

An unknown businessman claimed ownership of the land that the high commission was erecting a building on for the accommodation of its staff. He threatened to demolish it and assumed ownership of the land.

The Nigerian high commission relayed the information to the Ghanaian government but nothing was done about it.

The businessman carried his threat last Friday, 19th June 2020, when he sent a bulldozer to the building and demolished it.

Many Nigerians have also condemned the demolition with Some threatening to retaliate by also attacking Ghanaian interests in the country.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to the matter. The sector minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has promised to conduct an expedite investigation to bring the perpetrators to book.

It also added that security has been strengthened at the affected facility to wade off further damage as the ministry works hard to forestall any diplomatic fallout between the west African neighbouring countries.

The two Anglophone countries have been enjoying close to four decades of close collaboration and mutual respect after their relationship was bruised on two occasions.

Former Ghana’s leader, Kofi Abrefa Busia in 1971 sacked most Nigerians from the country after accusing them of not abiding by the country’s immigration laws.

Nigeria retaliated twelve years later when the Shehu Shagari government also deported Ghanaians who had sought economic refuge there.

A joint commission was set up in 1988 to foster good partnership between both countries. Since then there has been no issue of a diplomatic spat existing between them.
