Hajj 2020: Saudi Arabia To Allow Only 1000 Pilgrims To Visit Mecca

About a Thousand(1,000) pilgrims will be allowed to take the trip to the holy land for this year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia, the first of its kind in Muslims history.

Hajj Minister Mohammad Benten told reporters, “The number of pilgrims will be around 1,000, maybe less, maybe a little more,The number won’t be in tens or hundreds of thousands” this year, he added.

The annual pilgrim, last year, drew 2.5 million pilgrims worldwide to the holy city of Mecca but due to the global pandemic, coronavirus, a lot of restrictions have been instilled.

This year’s pilgrimage is scheduled for the end of July and will be limited to pilgrims below age 65 and with no chronic illnesses, Health Minister Tawfiq al-Rabiah disclosed.

The pilgrims will be tested for Coronavirus before arriving in the holy city of Mecca and will be required to quarantine at home after the ritual, he added.

The decision comes as Saudi Arabia grapples with a major spike in infections, which have now risen to more than 161,000 cases — the highest in the Gulf — with more than 1,300 deaths.
