Akufo-Addo Gets Acclaimed By N.P.P. Today

Former president Mahama will be making a comeback against incumbent Akufo-Addo

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will be holding a special ceremony where the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be acclaimed as its presidential candidate for this year’s election slated for December 7th.

President Akufo-Addo was the only candidate to have submitted his nomination forms after he picked them past February to contest in the party’s presidential primaries.

The acclamation of the Presidential Candidate together with his Running Mate will be done at a special National Council meeting of the Party at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

The constitution of the ruling party stipulates an acclamation should be done if there is a sole candidate for the presidency or parliamentary primary after the close of nominations.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party held a meeting on Friday in preparation of the acclamation ceremony which would be held at the Alisa Hotel with a selected few in attendance die to the coronavirus pandemic.

After his acclamation, the president shall, in consultation with the National Council, nominate his running mate for the 2020 general elections.

President Akufo-Addo is expected to maintain the vice president, Mahamudu Bawumia who partnered him in all his three presidential bids as his running mate.

This year’s election would be a straight contest between the president and his immediate predecessor, John Dramani Mahama who is yet to nominate his running mate after his former deputy Amissah-Arthur passed on two years ago.

The party has promised to broadcast the ceremony live on television so that its teeming supporters and the rest of the country would be able to watch it from their homes.
