As part of the restrictions to control the spread of coronavirus, the government ordered motorbikes used as taxis to stop carrying passengers and also operate an eleven-hour duration starting from six in the morning.

According to the police, Hussein Walugembe had lent his bike to a friend, who was caught transporting a passenger on Monday thereby breaking the government’s order. Several attempts to retrieve his vehicle proved futile.

On Thursday, he sneaked into a room at the station and locked himself. He then proceeded to douse himself in petrol he had concealed im a water bottle before setting himself on fire.

Officers rushed in to curtail the raging fire that engulfed the room and was spreading to others. One of them sustained minor injuries while many files and computers were destroyed in the inferno.

Some motorcycle riders condemned the police officers over the death of their colleague. They accused them of corruption and alleged that the police demanded hefty bribes from them anytime their motorbikes were seized.
