Ebonyi State Governor Becomes Latest Politician To Test Positive For Coronavirus

The state governor of Ebonyi State, south-eastern Nigeria has tested positive for the coronavirus disease. Dave Umahi announced his coronavirus status in a statement on Saturday.

He also revealed that some of his aides have tested positive for the deadly pandemic as the number of cases rises in his state.

Although he is asymptomatic at the moment, the governor stated that he has gone into self-isolation in tandem with safety protocols given by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The governor also mentioned that he would be participating in meetings virtually. He also entreated all his state residents to observe the safety measures in place to forestall the escalation of the pandemic.

Dave Umahi joins a growing list of state governors who had contracted the disease with some even infecting their spouses and top aides.

Other governors on the list are Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State tate, Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.

Oyo State former governor, Abiola Ajimobi also joins former Buhari chief of staff, Abba Kyari on the list of prominent Nigerians who have succumbed to the disease.

The state has recorded 438 cases with 357 recoveries and 3 deaths. Nigeria is one of the hardest hit countries in Africa with almost 28,000 confirmed cases and 628 deaths.
