Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang Is Mahama’s Running Mate

Former Education minister in the erstwhile government has been selected by immediate past president, John Dramani Mahama to complete the opposition National Democratic Congress ticket for this year’s election slated for December 7th.

The educationist who previously served as vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Coast brings to the table a solid experience after several years in the public service.

The Cape Coast-born academician attended the famous all-girls Wesley Girls High School from 1964 to 1971. She then proceeded to the University of Cape Coast for her degree in English and French.

She then moved to Canada for both her Masters and Doctorate degrees at the  York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1980 and 1986 respectively.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang taught and worked at the University of Cape Coast, starting in 1986 where she held various academic positions including Head of the Department of English.

Other positions included Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Warden of Adehye Hall, Valco Trust Fund Post-Graduate Hostel and Dean of School of Graduate Studies and Research.

From 1997, she has held the position of Academic Director of the School for International Training in the History and Cultures of the African Diaspora. From 2008-2012 she was the University’s Vice Chancellor.

Her selection has drawn mixed reactions from the party’s supporters. Those who back the idea lauds her impeccable educational achievement and unblemished personality.

Other supporters have revealed their disappointment at her selection. They revealed that she is no match to the current vice president Dr. Muhammadu Bawumia who partners the president for the record fourth time.
