Gabonese president, Ali Bongo has elevated his defence minister, Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda to the position of prime minister. The appointment which makes her the first female prime minister was announced today.

The 56 year old Ossouka Raponda, 56, who has served as defence minister since February 2019 had previously been elected mayor of the country’s capital, Libreville and budget minister. She replaces Julien Nkoghe Bekale who steps down after one and a half years in charge.

She is the sixth person to hold the office of prime minister since President Bongo became president after his father, Omar Bongo died in office eleven years ago.

Her immediate job is to restore the economy on track as prices of the country’s main export, oil continue to plummet as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
