Conjoined Twins Separated In Nigeria

A team of fifty medical doctors and other health professionals have been lauded by the minister of state for health, Adeleke Mamora after they successfully separated a pair of conjoined twins.

The nine-hour operation took place at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Keffi, Nasarawa State, north-central Nigeria. Fortunately, the babies had no intra-operative complications.

The minister assured that the Keffi Medical Centre would be one of the centres the Federal Government would focus on for specialised surgery.

He explained that after extensive clinical and detailed investigations, the twins were adjudged to be joined at the abdomen and rib cage.

The team included paediatric surgeons, plastic surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, anaesthetists, intensivists, paediatricians/neonatologist and nurses among other professionals.

Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Yahaya Adamu, who was part of the team, showered praises on the doctors.

The twins are the second set of babies to have passed through FMC Keffi with similar conditions.
