My Family Nearly Rejected Me Because I Chose To Be A Musician – Fireboy Says

Fast rising Nigerian singer Fireboy DML, celebrated for his hit single Jealous, has told his struggles in taking music as a full time career.

Fireboy recalled how his mother stood against his decision to follow his music talent and abandoning school.

He said is situation even worsened when his family realized he was not doing gospel music instead.

“My mother was forcing Yinka Ayefele, Tope Alabi songs down my throat. I was not the black sheep in the family until l told my parents l was going for music. My parents weren’t supportive at first because it was a switch. It was a very big switch from a promising child that seemed destined to be a professor to someone who suddenly woke up to wanting to be a musician.

Narrating how he met Olamide and he helped changed his family’s perception about music, he said;

“It took some time for them to get used to that. Their reaction was because l gave them hope that l was going to be a scholar and then the sudden switch. I convinced them in the long run by becoming successful. My mum is my biggest fan now.”

Fireboy DML, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter signed to YBNL Nation, an independent record label founded by Nigerian rapper Olamide. His debut studio album Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps was released in 2019.
