Liberian president, George Weah has declared rape as a national emergency in a bid to curb the rising spate of the menace.

The west African nation has in recent times recorded high rate of rape cases that has become worrying to the country’s authority.

President Weah on Friday suggested setting up a special prosecutor for rape in Liberia alongside the establishment of a national sex offender registry.

Thousands of Liberians protested against the increasing rate of rape cases in the capital, Monrovia last month. The protest put the spotlight on the menace and has generated national conversation around it afterwards.

The ex football star, whiles addressing the people said Liberia was “witnessing what is actually an epidemic of rape within the pandemic, affecting mostly children and young girls across the country.”

He also announced that the government will also establish a something he call “national security task force” on sexual- and gender-based violence.
