Court Passes Judgement On The Defamation Suit Involving Toke Makinwa And Ex-husband

The court has finally ruled on the defamation suit involving media personality, Toke Makinwa and her ex-husband Maje Ayida.

The ex-husband filed a defamation suit to stop Toke from promoting and selling of her memoir, ‘On Becoming’. In the memoir, Toke Makinwa revealed all that happened in their 13 years old relationship including how her husband got his girlfriend pregnant whiles married to her.

The ex-husband argued that the memoir contained some defamatory words about him.

Maje requested that, Toke should stop circulating the book and should recall all those that have been sold already and bring them to him for destruction.

He also demanded a N100m in damages – all of which he intends to donate to charity.

Justice Ogunjobi of the Lagos State High Court at Tafawa Balewa Square on Thursday November 12, stated that after careful consideration of the evidence before the court, it finds only the contents of page 54 line 11-16 and page 83, Line 1 of the 1st defendants’ book as Defamatory.

The court awarded N500,000 each for the two pages and also directed that, Toke Makinwa should not print those pages in the future circulation of her memoir.
