Napoli Renames Stadium After Diego Maradona

Authorities of Italian football club, Napoli has okayed a suggestion by the Naples mayor to rename their stadium after the club’s legend, Diego Armando Maradona.

The stadium which was known as Stadio Sampaolo will now be changed to Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The club released a statement on Friday, 4th December, 2020 where they confirmed the decision. The club listed some of the achievements of the Argentine during his 7-year stint with the club.

He helped Napoli to two Serie A titles and he’s considered a demigod within the Napoli family.

“With his immense talent and his magic, he honoured the Napoli shirt for seven years, giving it two historical championships and other prestigious cups, and receiving in exchange from the whole city an eternal and unconditional love,” a statement on Friday from the council read.

“Through the football victories of the Argentine champion, it was not only the Napoli team that won but the whole city, which fully identifies with him,” it read.

“Always on the side of the weakest and the common people, Maradona fought the prejudices and discrimination that Neapolitans were still subjected to inside the stadiums, becoming the idol of the entire city.”
