All mobile phones running Microsoft Windows OS will stop featuring WhatsApp from Tuesday, December 31.

The messaging company mentioned that the development is necessary because the operating system does not have the needed capabilities to add its future updates. Before the decision was taken, Facebook which precedes WhatsApp, had stopped new account creations on mobile Windows platform.

WhatsApp has said that its instant messaging app will stop working on all phones running Microsoft Windows OS from Tuesday, December 31. It should be noted that Facebook, the precedent of WhatsApp, stopped people from creating new accounts on Windows phones earlier in the year, Daily Mail reports. The reason for doing so, according to the company, was because it has stopped developing updates for the platform, and as such there would not be new updates or features for the OS.

The app company was also reported to have said that it is stopping support for devices whose operating systems do not have the capabilities that are needed to expand the app’s features.

The decision to stop running on Microsoft Windows phones was taken because such gadgets can no longer supports future updates.

In that view, it will also be stopping support for older Apple and Android devices. That will affect devices that run Android gadgets on 2.3.7 and older and iOS 8. Apple said that only 7% of its devices worldwide are running OS older than iOS 12, an operating system that was released in 2018. Another thing worthy of note is that WhatsApp will only be supporting android devices on 4.0.3 and higher and iOS 9 upwards.

“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones,” the app company said.

But if you use an Android device, you may want to double-check which apps you have installed.

Researchers from ESET have warned users about 42 dangerous apps that were previously available on the Google Play Store that contain adware – software that automatically displays adverts, even when the app is closed.

While these apps are longer available on the Google Play Store, they’ve amassed a whopping eight million downloads.

ESET has revealed the names of 21 of the apps, which include Free Radio FM Online, Flat Music Player and Heroes Jump (scroll down for list).

Worryingly, these apps have their code hidden under a package name ‘com.google.xxx’.

In a blog about the dangerous apps, Lukas Stefanko, a researcher at ESET, explained: “This trick – posing as a part of a legitimate Google service – may help avoid scrutiny. Some detection mechanisms and sandboxes may whitelist such package names, in an effort to prevent wasting resources.”

Thankfully, Google has now removed these apps from the Google Play Store, after ESET reported the issue.

Mr Stefanko added: “Sneaking unwanted or harmful functionality into popular, benign apps is a common practice among “bad” developers, and we are committed to tracking down such apps.

“We report them to Google and take other steps to disrupt malicious campaigns we discover.”
