The Ekiti State government has raised alarm over some food items that were looted from the Covid-19 Palliatives that were set to be distributed later.

According to the government, the food items that were carted away are unwholesome and the public should not consume such products.

Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mr Akin Omole, disclosed this in a statement and added that it was a necessary thing to do to save people from consuming the poisonous food.

The office of the Agricultural Development Program (ADP) in Ado Ekiti was also ransacked. Below are his words.

“Information at our disposal revealed that the Federal Government’s silos, the ADP warehouse and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) stores, all in Ado- Ekiti, were attacked by hoodlums under the guise of seeking Covid-19 palliatives.

“We insist that Ekiti State currently has no Covid-19 palliative warehouse as all the palliatives had been distributed.

“Unfortunately, the items carted away were Single Super Phosphate and NPK fertilisers, which they erroneously thought was “Gaari’’, cassava grains.

“The SEMA store too has only emergency supplies for disaster response.

“Some people even made away with pre-fermented corns preserved for planting. All these items are poisonous and not fit for consumption.

“We, therefore, appeal to our people not to consume these items because they can kill,’’ Omole warned.

In a similar statement, Dr Olabode Adetoyi, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, confirmed the looting, warning that most of the items carted away contained chemically-treated seeds meant for planting.

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has expressed optimism that poverty can be eradicated in Nigeria by 2030, as projected, with diligent execution of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr. Fayemi said the state would continue to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) vision of ensuring that poverty is banished across developing nations, especially in Nigeria.

The governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Biodun Omoleye, spoke in Ado Ekiti on Saturday during an event commemorating the 2019 International Youth Day.

He said : “The essence of the SDGs is to eradicate poverty globally and make the world a better place to live for everyone by 2030.”

“Throughout the world, there is a new order that recognizes the skills of young people, a new order that believes society must be devoid of poverty and diseases, a new order that believes people must live well, a world free of pollution.”
