Nollywood actress Funke Akindele experienced the law in full force over the weekend when she defied law on public gathering to organize a birthday party for her husband.

Few hours after her arrest, the National Centre for disease and Control and Dettol has denounced the actress as their brand ambassador.

The Jenifer’s Dairy star was featured in an educational commercial by the NCDC on the preventive measures against coronavirus.

NCDC via a twitter post stated that they have nothing to do with the actress and has proceeded to take down her video from their official website.

Dettol also severe their ties with Funke, saying, ‘a responsible organization and brand like Dettol does not condone any breach of the guidlines on COVID-19.’

Report from other major Nigerian blogs suggest Funke is likely to face prosecution.

Kenyans could find themselves paying for WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms if a proposal by a Member of Parliament is passed. This law if passed will see most of them boycotting the social media platforms soon and may discourage becoming an “administrator”.

The Bill sponsored by Malava MP Moses Injendi is seeking to have administrators of WhatsApp and Facebook groups be compelled to acquire licenses from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).

“The Commission may on the application in a prescribed manner and upon payment of a prescribed fee, grant a license authorizing any person to establish a social media platform for purposes of communication,” it reads.

The WhatsApp and Facebook group administrators will have to approve members and content, using legal documents and will further be expected to keep all the data of the users of the platform and submit the same to the authorities when required.

It also applies to the use of social media where Kenyans may now be faced with Ksh.500,000 fine or two-year jail term for posting degrading or intimidating content online as well as content that is prejudicial against race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, religion, political affiliation, language, ability or appearance.

In addition, posting information on social media that is deemed to be unfair, inaccurate and biased as per a court of law will also pose a risk of jail term or fine. If the Bill is passed, Kenyans on social media platforms such as Facebook will have to notify the authorities when they want to create groups.

“Any person who contravenes the provision of this section commits an offense and shall be liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding Ksh. 200,000 or to an imprisonment of a term not exceeding one year,” the Bill reads.
