The Kenyan government on Tuesday ordered all schools should remain closed till next year. Thus the school years is considered lost as the east African country speeds up measures to contain the coronavirus disease in the country.

The academic calender starts from January to November culminating in an end-of-term exams the following month. Minister of Education, George Magoha had explained that the country’s number of surging cases us expected to flatten in early January.

As a result, no primary and secondary school examinations will be held and the academic year declared void. Kenya was one of the first African countries to put in drastic measures when the disease got spread into Africa.

The country’s schools were closed in mid-March at a time it had recorded less than five cases. A lockdown was subsequently imposed and all borders alongside airports were sealed.

President Uhuru Kenyatta also announced a string of measures. Internal travel will be soon permitted and the airports opened on August 1st to international traffic. However the 9pm to 4am curfew remains unchanged.

Schools had been planned to resume in mid-September but a growing number of cases meant that the government had to suspend that decision. The country now has more than 8,000 cases with a death toll of 164.

Universities and other higher educational institutions will be allowed to resume on a yet-to-be declared date. They have been advised to continue with the virtual classes and graduation ceremonies.
