Kenyan teacher Peter Tabichi who is celebrated in the country and beyond has finally met Pope Francis.

The global teacher prize winner, 2019 met the Pope at Santa Marta in Rome. The two held discussions over the role of the teacher in society.

Peter Tabichi could not hide his joy after meeting the leader of the Catholic church in the world. It was definitely a moment that will be a highlight of his 2020.

In a post shared on Twitter on Wednesday, January 8, the global teacher prize winner disclosed that Pope Francis had asked him to pray for him and in return he also told him to pray for teachers.

Tabichi wrote “Was inspired by the great humility of the @Pontifex. 
” During the meeting at Santa Marta in Rome he told me: Pray for me, brother!”

“I too replied: “Pray for us and all the teachers”. May the new year be filled with new hope, new joy and new beginnings.”

In 2019, Tabichi had the pleasure of meeting the President of the free world, Donald Trump.

He met POTUS at the White House in September 16, 2019. He later on went to address the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Peter Tabichi is a member of the St Franciscan Friars. The church is a religious order founded by St Francis of Assisi in the 13th century.

The teacher who actually teaches at Keriko Mixed Secondary School became famous after scooping KSh 100 million in the Global Teacher Prize 2019.

He beat nine other contestants to scoop the much coveted award and honor.

Kenya has produced the first African and male teacher to win the 2019 Global Teacher Prize. Peter Tabichi will also be the first professional in Kenya to address the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. That is yet another record set.

Teacher Tabichi is a member of the St Franciscan Friars, a religious order founded by St Francis of Assisi in the 13th century. He will be expected to recite the popular St Francis prayer before the start of the general assembly. This news was confirmed by Brother Tony Donald from Ireland who spoke at the Molo Novitiate over the weekend. “This is a big honor for St Franciscan brothers. It shows that the UN recognizes our order as it plays a key role in the development of humanity,” he said.

The UN assembly starts its sessions on September 17 and top of the agenda are climate change, universal health coverage and the politics of sustainable development. The world’s best teacher will also give a brief remarks on how he made it to the top in the teaching profession. There will also be meetings on financing for development, elimination of nuclear weapons and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
