The academic board of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has appointed the school’s first female vice chancellor at its 258th meeting.

Prof Rita Akosua Dickson, a phytochemist by training, until her elevation was the pro vice chancellor of the same institution.

She graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy in 1994 and acquired a masters degree at the same university in pharmacognosy five years later.

She pursued her doctorate degree in 2003 on a Commonwealth scholarship at the University of London, United Kingdom.

Rita Dickson began her career as a lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in the year 2000.

She returned to Ghana in 2007 and continued lecturing at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

In 2009, she was promoted to a senior lecturer and further to an associate professor in 2014. She was later made the dean of the faculty of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.

Her work as a phytochemist covers the areas of bioactive natural products in the management of communicable and non-communicable diseases.

A press release by the school’s public relations office stated that her appointment for a four-year term takes effect from August 1, 2020, to July 31, 2024.
