When Kenyan entertainment and lifestyle Reporter Charlie Gachango retweeted pictures of Divorce cakes being advertised, twitter went abuzz with reactions. The original ad which was posted by a South African resident received mixed recreations not only from Kenyans on twitter but from Africans in general.
Divorce which is still not widely accepted in many parts of Africa is a serious issue that is not praised or celebrated. This probably explains why this Divorce cake situation was not taken lightly with quite a number of people. One user commented by tweeting “What inspired you? This is demonic.” Another user shared that the cakes looked scary and that divorce is not a joke.
On the flip side, many reactions expressed delight in the cakes with an appreciation for the creative mind behind them. A divorce is usually going to break a person or set someone free. Why not have your friends surprise you with a Divorce cake? Is there ever a bad time for cake?
A most interesting comment shared quoted “You just brought an idea. I am starting a decorations company that will cater only for divorce parties. Then your cakes will have a place to be used.” Whether this user was joking or being serious, one thing remains clear; Divorce cakes have a market. In fact, bakers reading this will probably think of more unorthodox cakes such as R.I.P cakes for celebrate a life well lived at funerals. All in all, there is probably a business opportunity behind any catastrophe.
