When hip hop and R&B band Camp Mulla introduced their songs to Kenya back in 2010, they became an immediate hit especially their only girl musician, Karun. It was therefore shocking when the band broke up after Karun dismantled the first block by leaving to pursue a solo career in 2013. Fast forward to 2019, the independent alternative R&B pop artist, officially known as Karungari Mungai has opened up on why she exited the famous BET-nominated pop group Camp Mulla when they were at the peak of their career.

According to the talented 25-year-old, she was constantly overwhelmed by the fame that came with being part of the group, especially being famous at such a young age. Karun said she was only 16 years old at the peak of her fame and that eventually, the pressure couldn’t allow her to experiment and live freely.

“I was tired of the fame. It was stifling me. I couldn’t make any mistake. I couldn’t experiment. I couldn’t really find out who I was or who I wanted to be because of people’s eyes. I was already that girl from Camp Mulla ,” said her quoted statement in the Standard newspaper.

The ‘Glow Up’ singer explained candidly that Camp Mulla was going through a really rough time behind the scenes aka chini ya maji and the BET nomination came at a time when they were splitting up unofficially but that was then and this is now. Karun has since fared on fantastically and celebrated a major victory when named in the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 2019 list – Creatives Category.
