Brilliant: Old Phones Were Used To Make The 2020 Olympic Medals

Tokyo 2020 organizing committee had first announced it would be making its medals out of recycled electronics way back in February 2017, asking the public to donate its old or unwanted phones.

The 2020 Olympic medals were created using recycled metals from old electronic devices.

To create the approximately 5,00 medals needed, the organizing committee launched a campaign to get people in Japan to donate their old phones.

Tokyo 2020 organizing committee had first announced it would be making its medals out of recycled electronics way back in February 2017, asking the public to donate its old or unwanted phones.

Gold, silver and bronze were extracted from the phones, with the same method used in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

“The medals symbolize the energy of athletes, as well as the diversity of the games, Tokyo 2020 said, while their brilliant “signifies the warm glow of friendship.”

The medals will not be the only Tokyo 2020 artifact that us made using recycled materials.

A similar campaign was launched for the podiums which will be made of recycled household and ocean plastic.

The uniform to be worn by torchbearers will also be partially made from recycled plastic bottles.
