Despite being a heinous crime, rape cases are rarely reported in the country. This is due to fear of stigma and lack of faith in the police actually finding the perpetrators. Statistics show that 32% of Kenyan girls and 18% of boys under the age of 18 years experience some form of sexual violence. Furthermore, nearly one in three Kenyan girls are sexually violated before the age of 18.

Wangu Kanja at App Launch event

To help shed more light on the unreported cases of sexual violence, the Wangu Kanja Foundation have just launched an app for survivors of sexual violence ordeals in Kenya. The app goes by the name SV_CaseStudy and can be downloaded on Google Play Store. The launch was followed by the creation of the hashtag #MobileAppForSurvivors.

Sexual violence is a pandemic and if not dealt with our society will fall apart. Thanks Wangu Kanja for this mobile app that will help track and report all forms of sexual violence in Kenya,” shared one twitter user via the trending #MobileAppForSurvivors

The main objective that the app aims to achieve is to properly document sexual violence cases. This is in a bid to understand the context, trends and prevalence of the perpetrators as well as their various characteristics. Another key objective of the app is to create a database that documents cases of sexual violence for analysis. This information if well captured will help to formulate policies, inform advocacy, coordination and internships.

Thanks to this app, survivors of sexual violence will not be dismissed or forgotten. It’s a tool of justice. Spread the word and help stop sexual violence in Kenya.
