Muslim Women Protest Against Oro (A Festival That Prohibits Women From Going Out) In Nigeria – Video

Oro is a traditional Yuroba festival that is observed annually in July. The festival takes several days and women, kids and those who are not participating are required to stay indoors until it’s over.

Some Muslim women who have had to battle with the prohibitions and saw it as an infringement on their freedom of movement went on a protest against the rule.

As it is believed, an Oro must not be seen by women so they together with those who are not connected with the event are asked to stay indoors as the masquerades parade the streets at night.

In an era of human rights, these restrictions have come under questioning as some of these Muslim women feel it bothers so much on their right of movement and life.

It is reported that the said rule has led to the killing of a Hausa woman sometime in the past for not staying indoors during the festival at night.
