Depression is Real: Teacher Commits Suicide by Setting Himself on Fire in Vihiga

A secondary school teacher in Vihiga County committed suicide by burning himself in his house. The unfortunate ordeal which happened on Sunday is still being investigated by police. It is speculated that depression is what caused the victim to set himself ablaze.

The victim, Mr. Daniel Ingoro was a Biology and Geography teacher at Hobunaka Secondary School. He was due for retirement in six months. According to County Police Commander Hassan Barua, the late Mr. Ingoro was seen buying petrol at a nearby petrol station. He then allegedly locked himself in his house and set it ablaze on Sunday night.


According to sources, the teacher and his wife divorced 40 years ago and since then, he has never remarried. The head teacher of the school, Mr. William Sunguti said that the last time he saw the victim was in a staff meeting. “After the staff meeting, he made a closing prayer,left for home and did not show any signs of depression,” said the headteacher.

“It is unfortunate we have lost our member. There are speculations that he took his life so we urge teachers to share the challenges they are facing,” said Kuppet official, Vihiga county.
