Shocking: This is What Female DJ’s Go Through in Kenya

For years, the entertainment industry in Kenya was dominated by male DJ’s. However, with the evolution of the industry these past few years, girls have taken over the decks in clubs. Eunice Wanjiku popularly known as DJ Nyc is one of Kenya’s most successful female DJ’s. She is also the resident DJ at Radio Jambo.

Speaking candidly, DJ Nyc revealed that she among other female DJs face several challenges in the industry. One of the biggest challenges is being seen as a threat instead of an ally by male counterparts. “There is discrimination in the industry as some male DJs see you as a threat and try to fight you,” she said.

Another challenge that comes as no surprise is that male DJs want to sleep with female DJs before connecting them with gigs. “Some DJs want to sleep with you before giving you gigs,” she said in an interview with Word Is. She however made it clear that her co hosts Mbusi and Lion have impacted her career positively by supporting her.

Her message to all girls out there who want to be DJs is ” It won’t be easy at the start, but focusing on what you want to achieve is key.”
