Tragedy as 14 Year Old Student Commits Suicide After Being Humiliated over Her Period by Her Class Teacher

A 14 year old girl in Konoin constituency committed suicide after her teacher made fun of her soiled dress in class. The standard six pupil was on her period at the time. After the public humiliation, the student from Kabiangek Primary School was found hanging from a tree.

On Tuesday afternoon, over 200 parents stormed the school alongside the victim’s mother Beatrice Chepkurui. They condemned the class teacher and administration for failing to protect the deceased. Drama erupted during the protest and five parents ended up in police custody.

The victim’s mother said that her daughter had started her periods on Friday but lacked sanitary towels. “She had nothing to use as a pad. When the blood stained her clothes, she was told to leave the classroom and stand aside,” said Beatrice. Little did she know that later that evening, her daughter would take her own life.

“It was very inhumane for the teacher to publicly humiliate her, and that is the reason she hung herself. The teacher should take responsibility,” said one of the victim’s relatives. Police are still investigating the unfortunate incident.
