Retired President Daniel Toroitich arap Moi passed away on Tuesday February 4 while receiving treatment at The Nairobi Hospital.

President Uhuru Kenyatta just announced the news to the public in a presidential proclamation.

“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of a Great African statesman, H.E. Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, the Second President of the Republic of Kenya.

His Excellency the Former President passed on at the Nairobi Hospital on the early morning of this 4th February, 2020 in the presence of his family,” said the president.

The death of the former president was also confirmed by press secretary Lee Njiru and his family.

Moi’s son Gideon Moi held a brief press conference at the Nairobi Hospital this morning. He said that his father died peacefully while receiving treatment.

President Moi took office in 1978 and ruled for 24 years before handing over to former President Mwai Kibaki in 2002. He has passed away at the age of 95.
