South Africa In Massive Jubilation As Ban On Alcohol Is Lifted In Coronavirus Relaxation

Many people in South Africa are in jubilation after a ban on the sale of alcohol was lifted as part of the reviews in the handling of the coronavirus disease in the country.

In a video that has since gone viral, many people thronged to liquor shops to buy alcohol, the first time since the ban came into effect two months ago.

The country’s government led by the president, Cyril Ramaphosa placed a ban on the sale of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease.

He buttressed his decision on the fact that excessive drinking could break social distancing protocols while also adding that alcoholism causes a surge in violence.

South Africans have welcomed the lifting of the ban and were seen in long queues across the country to get the first bottles of their favourite alcoholic drinks.

The country is the hardest-hit on the African continent with confirmed cases hitting almost 33,000. Half of that number have recovered with 683 people losing their lives.
