South Africa has confirmed the death of a two-day-old baby from coronavirus who was born prematurely.

This case which is the youngest victim of coronavirus was born to a mother who had already tested positive to the disease. It is the country’s first neonatal death.

Zweli Mkhize, Minister of Health said the deceased baby had a problem with its lung and required ventilation immediately after birth.

“The mother had tested positive for Covid-19 and the child subsequently tested positive for Covid-19 as well. It is important to appreciate the complexities of the underlying condition of prematurity,” he said on Wednesday.

South Africa, which is the hardest hit country on the African continent reported 27 new deaths bringing the total number of casualties to 339.

Am additional 803 new coronavirus cases were confirmed on last night taking the tally to 18,003 with almost half of them discharged.

Comoros has confirmed its first case of the coronavirus disease. The east African island nation was one of the only few nations without any case in the pandemic.

President Azali Assoumani explained the 50 year-old patient is a dual national of Comoros and France. He also confirmed contact tracing has been initiated to track down the disease spread.

This development leaves Lesotho as the only African country to have no recorded case of the coronavirus disease. The continent has recorded a total of 37,391 case with about a third recovery rate. The death toll currently stands at 1,598.

Africa remains the continent less hit by the Covid-19 pandemic
