Why Sarkodie And Efya’s New Song Is Toxic And Must Be Enjoyed With Caution https://africacelebrities.com/2019/10/17/why-sarkodie-and-efyas-new-song-is-toxic-and-must-be-enjoyed-with-caution/ Thu, 17 Oct 2019 11:00:15 +0000 https://africacelebrities.com/?p=159159 This is a song basically assuring someone who is cheating on you and treating you poorly that you’ll stick with them no matter how shitty they get.

Music is way more powerful than most people realize. Music has the power to influence situations and mindsets. The kind of music you listen to is mostly a reflection of where you’re at emotionally, mentally and spiritually in life.

In every song, there’s a message. Some subliminal, others not very much. I tend to judge people by their playlists, and I’m sure a lot of people do too.  Like most people, I am profoundly unapologetic about my taste in music. There’s a reason why Shatta Movement, SarkNation and the rest are a real thing. Music provokes passion.

Sometimes it’s not just about the message, it’s the vibe and the attitude, amongst other things. That’s why it gets quite conflicting when you hear a song you think is great but then you realize it has toxic undertones. The first time I heard “We Are Taking The Girls Away” I thought it was funny.

But then I got to actually listen to it later and some lines in it put me off the song for good. Maybe it’s just me, but singing “whatever you say, whatever you do, I will take you home tonight” totally rubs me hard the wrong way. Thankfully it wasn’t one of those songs that are forced down our eardrums no matter how dreadful they are, so I didn’t get to hear it much, thankfully.

However, I have recently faced a similar dilemma. I heard a new song by Sarkodie and Efya. It’s not one of those you have to listen to like a million times before you reluctantly decide that the second hook is probably alright. Sarkodie and Efya make great music together, and “Saara” is no exception. It’s one of those songs that sound like a song you used to like.

Nevertheless, I feel that it’s sending an unhealthy message. This is a song basically assuring someone who is cheating on you and treating you poorly that you’ll stick with them no matter how shitty they get.

Sadly, a lot of people are stuck in severely unfulfilling relationships, making excuses for the pathetic behavior of their partners. Some are even in life-threatening situations but they stay because somehow they are under the impression that if they love these monsters who take them for granted hard enough they’ll end up “reforming” them.

Some end up taking a dirt nap before they realize the best thing you can do for someone who simply doesn’t appreciate you enough to treat you decently and not cheat is to let them go. The last thing you need if you’re in such a situation is a song telling you it’s okay to stay because you love your abuser and would forgive them even if they kill your mother.

It’s scary to think that some dysfunctional couples might consider making this their theme song. Musicians, especially those in the mold of Sarkodie and Efya need to realize the kind of influence their music has. This is a song I hear every day even when I don’t step out of my room because people are blasting it on speakers everywhere. I’m sure some people already know all the lyrics.

Now, I know some will chastise me for being too bitter to simply enjoy a song, move on and stop taking things too seriously. Hello, have you met me? I listen to Vic O and Patapapa! I am not asking people to not listen to the song or anything. I just feel I need to remind anyone out there who is being treated unsatisfactorily by their partner that they can of course forgive, but they can also do better and simply walk away.

So enjoy, but remember that cheating shouldn’t be condoned in a monogamous relationship and it’s okay to stop giving your love to a shitty person.
