The government of Ghana has promised to bear the cost of construction of the staff quarters of the Nigerian High Commission which was demolished last week Friday.

The demolition led to a wild condemnation from the Nigerian minister of Foreign Affairs who was supported by his fellow citizens calling for retaliation.

An investigative committee was immediately set up by the Foreign Affairs whose findings led to the arrest of two persons who have since been charged by the police for vandalism.

Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo also placed a call to his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari to have the unfortunate incident solved diplomatically.

The committee through its submission revealed that the contentious land actually belongs to the Nigerian High Commission. It also found put that the High Commission of Nigeria actually has receipts of payment of the land but failed to acquire a land title certificate.

The High Commission of Nigeria further presented receipts of payment of the said land made by bankers draft…however land title certificate had not been issued to the High Commission,” Foreign Affairs Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchway said.

The committee adds that the Nigerian High Commission failed to provide relevant documents on ownership of the land which contributed to the unfortunate development.

“The Lands Commission advised the High Commission of Nigeria to provide relevant document on ownership of the land but the former did not respond to the letter. Based on the silence of the High Commission of Nigeria, the Lands Commission went ahead to issue a Land title certificate covering the said parcel of land to a 3rd party”

The Nigerian community in Ghana has criticized their host government of creating tension between the Nigeria and Ghana, something which is described as having the tendency to disrupt the diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The two Anglophone countries have been enjoying almost four decades of close uninterrupted collaboration and mutual respect after their relationship was bruised on two major occasions.

Former Ghana’s leader, Kofi Abrefa Busia in 1971 sacked most Nigerians from the country after accusing them of not abiding by the country’s immigration laws.

Nigeria retaliated twelve years later when the Shehu Shagari government also deported Ghanaians who had sought economic refuge there.

A joint commission was set up in 1988 to foster good partnership between both countries. Since then there has been no issue of a diplomatic spat existing between them.

John Apewajoye, 42, passed on in April 11 at a hospital in Kenya where he was admitted for burns he suffered while fixing a gas cylinder at the couple’s home.

The gospel musician who is three months pregnant, told police investigators that her late husband had taken a gas cylinder out of the kitchen to check up for a leakage.

She added that he lit a match to check if it works. The fire ignited a huge blast and her husband was engulfed in flames in no time.

Her husband rushed into the house to call for a help. Ruth Matete further stated that she used a blanket to cover him in an attempt to douse the fire.

Neighbours came to her aid after hearing her screams and the injured man was taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

An autopsy on her deceased husband pointed to multiple organ failures exacerbated by the burn injuries he sustained in the fire accident.

Attempts to have her husband buried in Kenya with his family’s consent was blocked by the Nigerian High Commission in the country who suspected foul play.

Ruth Matete thus initiated a legal suit to compel the high commission to release her husband’s corpse for her to bury him in the east African country.
