Management of the Imo State University (IMSU) has suspended two lecturers who were fingered in some viral videos involved in a s3x for grades scandal.

The viral video saw one lecturer identified as Emmanuel Agumuo, who was caught naked in a hotel room trying to sleep with one of his students.

Ralph Njoku Obi, Spokesperson for the University, confirmed the new development to the press saying the lecturers were suspended and awaiting decisions from investigations on the viral video which is currently ongoing.

Ralph also added that the lecturers were in police custody in Owerri, the lecturers are reported to be senior lecturers in the Imo State University.

“We just came out of an expanded management meeting now. Management resolved to set up a panel to look into the veracity of the content of the video clips but as it stands now, the two lecturers have been suspended so they can give us ample room to do a proper investigation into the matter.” The spokesperson said.

“It is believed that the trending video clips may have again exposed the ugly underworld of sex-for-grade syndicates operating in the Imo State University, Owerri.”

#SexForGrades: I’ve Been Exonerated – UNILAG Professor

Olusegun Awonusi, a professor of English and former vice chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education, accused of “habitual sexual harassment” by a student has said the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has exonerated him.

In May 2018, Joy Nwanna, a student of the institution, released semi-nude photos of the lecturer through Linda Ikeji’s blog saying the lecturer “was used to molesting students and that she was reaching out to the public to curb his excesses.”

The action triggered anger and disgust from many Nigerians including the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

On May 31, 2018, UNILAG, in a statement by its spokesperson, Taiwo Oloyede vowed to “thoroughly investigate the allegation”.

It then called for submission of memoranda by members of the public which lasted for a month.

The panel was able to establish that the student involved is Joy Nwana, who graduated from the Department of English in the 2015/2016 academic session but said: “claims made by Ms Nwana and Linda Ikeji Blog could not be substantiated, because of their repeated absence at the panel’s enquiry sessions.”

The institution said the attempt to get the duo to make representations at “the sessions did not yield the desired results.”

However, it promised that the university would continue with its investigations.

Following the suspension of an associate professor, Boniface Igbeneghu; former sub-dean of Faculty of Art and head pastor of a local branch of the Foursquare Gospel Church after he was caught in a BBC video sexually harassing an ‘admission seeker’, Mr Awonusi has sopken.

The professor said that the panel raised by UNILAG to probe him did not find him guilty of the allegations leveled against him.

“Let me simply say this… The panel submitted their report and the university held two press conferences on the findings of the panel and the thing has ended that way. I have done what I’m expected to do.”

Asked if he is still a staff of UNILAG, he said: “Precisely. What has to be done has been done. I have attended interviews and authorities that should know are informed.”

Sex-for-mark practice is a common problem in Nigerian institutions, which over the years may had been encouraged by Nigerian universities due to their failure to appropriately sanction erring lecturers.

Journalist In Sex For Grade Exposé, Kiki Mordi Receives Death Threat

BBC released an investigative work yesterday on some African universities accusing some lecturers of sexually harassing their female students for sex. The work titled, Sex for Grades was done by BBC journalist Mordi Kiki.

Kiki disclosed in an interview with SaharaReporters that she has received death threats after the work was published but she wasn’t worried because her employers ensure the safety of their employees.

She said ‘I have received subtle threats since this work was completed but I am not bothered because the BBC takes the security of employees seriously. Before embarking on this project, the team prayed a lot and also sang because it helped to calm the nerves. But I had to go through the training I received over and over again because I wanted to get it right.’

She added that she’s happy the exposé was gaining the impact she wanted and also disclosed that one of the lectures at Legos University who was filmed sexually harassing a student has been dismissed.

‘The biggest goal of this work was to be louder than the aggressor because sexual harassment is very loud. I wanted it to be silenced. I am happy that a lot is changing already since the documentary was released and I can confirm to you that one of the lecturers at the University of Lagos caught sexually harassing a prospective student has been dismissed by the institution.’

Manasseh Azure Awuni Punches Holes In BBC’s Sex For Grade Expose

Manasseh Azuri Awuni is a Ghanaian journalist who over the years has made a name for himself in exposing some rots in the Ghanaian political environment and also done some investigative pieces.

The journalist in the wake of BBC’s Sex For Grade expose on two prestigious universities in Africa, University of Ghana and that of Lagos has come out to raise serious work defects about the expose.

The expose which has sparked argument on social media has kept some sections of Ghanaians calling the work, a sham and lazy since according to them, BBC failed to provide concrete evidence on one political lecturer, Prof Gyampo.

“The “Sex for Grades” hypothesis
*****************************************When going undercover to bust someone allegedly involved in an illegal or immoral act, you secretly record the incident, unobtrusively, as it takes place between the culprit and third parties. Where that is impossible, you may have a sting operation. Here again, you pose, for instance, as the prey, meet the predator and record proceedings. In that case, you don’t change the identity of the character you are playing or the subject of your investigation when you meet the alleged predator.

Investigative journalism is like academic research. If you have randomly or purposively (as in Prof. Gyampo’s case) sampled a university lecturer who allegedly offers undeserved grades to his sexually harassed students, then you can only use one approach to test your hypothesis: let your engagement focus on the subject of the investigation. Go to the lecturer and tell him you are one of his over one thousand students and you have failed his subject or you are not sure of passing his subject. If he asks for sex in order to give you the grade, you have your story.

You can easily get a fake student ID card and index number that show you a student taking his course. When you are going to bust a lecturer offering grades in return for sex, you don’t go to him or her as someone seeking mentorship or to seek national service placement without mentioning the subject of grades.

In the case of Prof. Gyampo, as shown in the video, the lecturer made advances at a student who wanted to be mentored. In the process, he told her to be free to accept or reject the proposal. She did not give in. He requested a hug after buying her shoes. She declined. And they parted ways.

I’m not justifying the conduct of Prof. Gyampo in the video. But the BBC’s investigative hypothesis, “Sex for Grades”, cannot be accepted or rejected because it was not tested in the first place.
