The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria has released a statement asking the Kano state government to execute 22-year-old singer, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu.

Few weeks ago, the Shari’ah court in Kano State found the musician guilty of blasphemy for recording a song which they deemed insulting to the prophet of Islam.

There has been pressure from human rights organizations mounting on the Kano State government not to carry out such a devilish act.

But the statement which was issued by the Council’s secretary, Nafi’u Baba-Ahmad rubbished those calling for the release of the accused saying that the ruling is in consonance with Islamic laws and the wish of majority of Nigerians who are muslims.

The statement reads; “The calls by some so-called human rights groups to pardon the culprit should not deter the state government from doing the right thing.

“This case is purely an Islamic affair, in consonance with the religion, culture and wishes of not only the people of Kano, but the majority of the population of Nigeria who are Muslims.

“The council further wishes to emphatically remind all Nigerians especially the secular human rights groups that the judgement is in line with the Supreme Court judgement.”

A sharia court in Kano State, northern Nigeria has handed down the death sentence to a musician who was found guilty of insulting the Islamic prophet, Muhammed.

The court ruled that Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, 22, was guilty of committing blasphemy for a song he produced and shared on popular social media handle, WhatsApp.

The accused did not deny the charges and the judge, Khadi Aliyu Muhammad Kani said he could appeal against the death sentence.

The northern region of Africa’s most populous country uses the strict version of sharia to adjudicate legal issues

Only one of the death sentences ordered by the sharia courts has been carried out since they were reintroduced in 1999.

Protestors have called for the swift execution of the ruling. They had burnt down his family home and gathered at the sharia court to attempt instant justice.

The musician was accused of blasphemous after he released a song which glorified his local imam in a way which puts him at par with the Islamic prophe.

Executive Director of Irbard Security Consult, Alhaji Irbard Ibrahim, has recommended that Ghana should consider adopting Shariah Law to curb corruption and murder.

According to Irbard, democracy seems not to be working for the country and therefore Shariah Law could be the best alternative to the governance system in the country.

Irbard said this in a Facebook post. He said: “Ghana should give Shariah Law a chance. It will serve us better than democracy.

Shariah is the quickest and most effective way of curbing murder and corruption. We’ve tried other governance systems for more than 60 years since independence, why don’t we try Shariah Law?”, he quizzed.
