Is The President’s Niece in trouble? KICC CEO Explains How She Spent Ksh 10 million in Mauritius

The niece to President Uhuru Kenyatta and CEO to Kenyatta International Convention centre (KICC), Nana Gecaga is getting media backlash for spending Ksh. 10 million on a trip she took with colleagues to Mauritius. The highly paid trip was to take the CEO and select members of the board to Mauritius to receive awards at the 26th Annual World Travel Award (WTA).

According to the CEO, the 20 persons delegation that went for the awarding ceremony cost a total of that outstanding 10 million in form of travel prices for air tickets , general allowances and entertainment allowances. Each KICC board member Received around sh. 583,900 for the four day period in Mauritius. Other members of staff who were lucky enough to go to the conference got a number between sh. 300,850 and sh. 386,250 depending on their ranks in the KICC staff hierarchy.

KICC management is monitored by Parliament’s Public Investments Committee. Following the hefty budget used for the trip by Nana Gecaga, the committee has called for investigations to be done to determine whether there was value for the money used during the trip. For the CEO’s sake, we hope she is cleared of all allegations.

On a more positive note, KICC was nominated in two categories for the awards; Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference Center 2019 and Africa’s Leading Business Travel Destination 2019. During the awards, Kenya took the latter award of Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference destination award with KICC taking the spotlight .
