on

Kenya is on the brink of a political showdown as simmering tensions between its leaders remain unabated. President Uhuru Kenyatta seems to have fallen out with his deputy, William Ruto. This could lead to a political crises in the event that the deputy president leaves the allegiance.

The two leaders went into an alliance with their political parties which saw their successful election in 2013. President Kenyatta finishes his second term of office in 2022. There are increasing lobbying to choose his successor from his own party much to the chagrin of Ruto’s party who see the latter as an automatic replacement.

The arrest and subsequent dismissal of Finance Minister, Henry Rotich, on corruption charges brought the tension to its peak. Ruto’s party sees the arrest of Rotich, an ally of Deputy President Ruto, as a plan to disgrace his party paving way to bypass him as his successor.
