Separatists Jailed for Life in Cameroon

A military court in Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital has handed down life sentences to ten Cameroonian separatists for their involvement in secession protests. Sisiku Ayuk Tabe, and nine of his followers were found guilty of armed rebellion against the Cameroonian state among other charges.

The convicts formed a breakaway country they called Ambazonia encompassing the two anglophone regions in the country. They claimed the English-speaking Cameroonians who are just 20% of the popuation were being marginalised by the francophone majority.

Cameroon was split between Britain and France after its colonial power Germany lost the First World War. Half of the Britain’s part joined Nigeria whiles the other half joined Cameroon to form its anglophone citizens. Decades of discrimination has led to agitations for secession with the Paul Biya-led government brutally clamping down on them.
