Speaker Of New Zealand Parliament Cradles Baby During Parliamentary Proceedings

A speaker of parliament is trending on Twitter and making news after a viral photo of him feeding a baby whilst conducting proceedings surfaced.

Trevor Mallard is the speaker of New Zealand’s House of Representatives, he was seen in the photo cradling a fellow member of parliament Tāmati Coffey’s new baby during proceedings.


It is reported that at a point during the debate, the baby makes a cooing noise when Trevor announced that one of the member’s time was over. The speaker seems to be comfortable, being a father himself. He is seen smiling whilst feeding the baby during the debate.

He shared the picture on his twitter handle with the caption; “Today a VIP took the chair with me,” he tweeted.

He congratulated Coffey, a fellow lawmaker, and his partner on the new member of their family.

It was Coffey’s first day back from paternity leave. Another lawmaker posted a photo of Coffey holding his newborn.

The pictures have impressed twitter users who have applauded the New Zealand parliament. They believe the picture sends a clear message that men can also care for babies.
