In his 30 years in the benga music history, the late John De’Mathew produced over 50 albums which were listened to widely by Kenyans. This explains why many have been greatly affected by his death which occurred on August 18th , 2019 after his personal car rammed a trailer-truck near Thika’s Blue Post Hotel at night.

In the wake of his death and with his burial set for Saturday, Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria has organized and sponsored a music show aka mugithi night to take place on Friday night before the singer’s burial. Artistes drawn from Mt Kenya region will be in attendance on the Friday event which will be held at Golden Palm Hotel in Kenol town and is expected to go for the whole night. Fans of the late De’Mathew have gone an extra mile to form a WhatsApp group pledging goats for slaughter during the event.

According to Murang’a Governor Wa Iria, the Friday night event will remind the Agikuyu people of the late De’Mathew who was acknowledged by local leaders and regarded as a Kikuyu prophet.“We want to remember him by listening to all his songs which play a major role in uniting the Agikuyu community as well as advising and entertaining our people,” the governor said.

Speaking to the public, Governor Wa Iria praised the late De’Mathew for being a great leader to the artistes from central Kenya after the passing of Joseph Kamaru last year. The governor said, “The late was not your ordinary musician. He took the mantle from the late Joseph Kamaru and as a matter of fact, it is only after Kamaru’s death that a sacco was formed and De’Mathew was appointed to be its chairperson.”
